So May 15- May 21, 2011 was AmeriCorps VISTA Week. This week is basically a week that the state of Virginia set aside to honor VISTA members and their sites for all the hard work we do in the community. The week ended with a luncheon in Newport News, Va at a church. We had a speaker named Kembia Smith. She was the young lady that 11 plus years ago was convicted of a crime and various organizations and churches merged together to release her from prison. She told the audience her story. The VISTAs, their site supervisor, and my coworkers were honor at the luncheon.. I got a certificated and a letter from Senator Warner thanking me for my year of service. How cool is that?.. VERY! Also door prices were given out. I did not win a door prize. But I sure wanted one.lol. Also this was the first year that they launched workshops. The workshops were helpful and informative. The workshop that I attended was called "Non-profit Boot Camp", It just gave to the tools that you needed to open up your own non-profit organization. The second workshop that I attended was "AmeriCorps Resources". This workshop basically told you about other amazing programs that AmeriCorps had to offer various non-profit organizations beside AmeriCorps VISTA.
I enjoy the luncheon, but most importantly I enjoy being there with my amazing coworkers. I am def gonna miss these wonderful women. They always say you gotta love what you do for a living. Well I love my job and love my coworkers. What a pleasant way to end the work week!
